Step Into the Edo Period

Step into Edo Wonderland for a historical reenactment of Edo Japan. The park has buildings and streets just like the Edo era. You’ll feel like you’re in a traditional Japanese samurai village with every detail.

While exploring, you’ll meet townspeople, samurai, and merchants. They stay in character, giving you a real look into the past. You can talk to them (in Japanese if you can) and learn about Edo era traditions.

Walk through streets filled with hands-on workshops where you can try traditional crafts—strum a shamisen, make your own crispy senbei (rice crackers), or shoot targets with a bow and arrow. All of this fun without a time machine!

Beyond the workshops, the entire town is alive with action. Watch thrilling ninja battles, elegant oiran parades, and lively street performances that make history feel anything but old.

Edo Wonderland is designed to make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time. Whether you’re a history buff or just here for the samurai selfies, this place brings the Edo period to life in a way no museum ever could. In all my travels across Japan, I’ve never felt history come alive quite like this. And one of the biggest reasons why? That’s up next.

Dress the Part & Join the Fun

At Edo Wonderland, dressing up is a big part of the fun. You can rent a kimono, samurai robes, or even full on armor to walk around. If you’re into cosplay or dressing up, you’re going to love this part.

If you’re going to time-travel, you might as well look the part!

I was even give a whole new identity—renamed K onosuke. Some spots in the park even offer professional photo shoots in your traditional outfit. Whether you go for a kimono, hakama, or full samurai armor (because why not?), it’s a one-of-a-kind way to connect with Japan’s past—and score some epic photos while you’re at it.

Ninja & Samurai Thrills

The park truly brings Japan’s past to life with high-energy ninja shows that will have you on the edge of your seat. Watch as stealthy warriors flip, vanish, and engage in intense mock battles, blending acrobatics, illusions, and pure ninja mastery. It’s a jaw-dropping showcase of the legendary skills that made these shadowy figures so feared—and so cool.

Want to learn from the warriors? Samurai training workshops are also available at certain times. They offer swordplay lessons and a peek into the samurai lifestyle.

They also have samurai training for kids. It’s a great family activity. Kids and adults can learn about samurai culture in a fun way. Though I didn’t see any English interpreting for these activities, it may be available through a paid guide within certain hours. Don’t quote me on this, so make sure to check out the official website in advance.

Edo-Style Eats

The park also offers a variety of dining options that bring historical Japan to life. Edo-style restaurants are a special place to enjoy dishes like handmade soba or hearty dishes like beef tendon over rice.

As you walk around, you’ll find traditional Japanese sweets as well such as anmitsu, warabi mochi, and shaved ice during the summer months.

When I went, I was already a bit full from a huge breakfast I had at the ryokan I stayed at. So I just had some ice cream as well as a rice cracker I made at a workshop.

How to Get There

Planning a day trip from Tokyo to Edo Wonderland is easy. This park is the perfect escape from Tokyo’s busy streets. Just take the Tobu Kinugawa Line for a scenic ride.

At Kinugawa-Onsen Station, your train journey ends. Here, you can catch a bus or a taxi to Edo Wonderland. Both options are quick and convenient.

You could also just spend the night at a nearby ryokan like I did. We recommend Itoen Hotel New Sakura for the best convenience and proximity to Edo Wonderland.

Before you go, check the train times and park hours. This way, you can enjoy everything Edo Wonderland has to offer. With these tips, your trip will be smooth and unforgettable.
